Prince Rasselas part 5
They search for a choice of Life
Prince Rassellas
(And The princess and her servant,
And Imlac of course)
Entered the city of Cairo
Here they found many who were cheerful
Many who appeared to be happy
And Imlac told them, to look about
And choose the life they wanted
Than He sold some jewels
And bought them a house
And furnished it well and richly
So all around
It was thought and told
That Imlac was a wealthy merchant
And the Man and Women with him
Didn't know the language
But were strangers of rich origin
So Rasselas went out
To determine his choice
And first he went to the men of his age
But great to his dismay
He found their joys were vulgar
As was their language and actions
And they didn't obey
The laws set in place, but on laughed at them
So Rasselas departed
From the company of them
But left with a warning and remonstrance
He told them to prepare
For the coming of old age
As those who are young
Should prepare for their later years
And make sure they always could be happy
But the men of his age
Only laughed him away
So he departed and didn't look back
As he was wandering around
Looking for his choice
He came upon an institution
When he entered he found
A man of great knowing
Who spoke with great wisdom
Prince Rasselas listened
As he spoke to the crowd
And left only when he was finished
When he got back to Imlac
He told him of the man
But Imlac warned him saying
"They may look so wise
And they seem so wise
But beware,
For they live like men"
The next day the prince
With the use of some money
Got into the room that the proffesor was in
But he saw him weeping
And soon was informed
That the great man's daughter had died
So now the proffesor
Had no hope in life
For his precepts gave no comfort for death
And all that he'd learned
Amounted to nothing
For he could not bring her back from the dead
Rasselas returned to Imlac
Sad that he had not found his choice
But determined to find it soon.
Later they (Imlac the Princess and Rasselas)
Went to visit the Shepherds
To see if indeed
The simple pleasures of the poor
Were the root of happiness
But they found them rude
And incontent
(Not to mention Incompetent)
And the Princess decided
She wanted no more of them
She said she only desired
To pick flowers she planted
And fondle a lamb
As she listened by a brook
To a friend reading a book
And they moved on.
