First Voyage
First Voyage
Excited and hoping but still
frightened of the sea, so large and
full of unknown weapons of the
Sea. Boarding the Brittanic the
sister ship of the Titanic,
outfitted for untrained Vads and
Nurses. Bound for Malta, that small
island filled with wounded sick and
dying victims of the bloody
War. On the Brittanic, pleasure
seemed to be something that the old
Sister-in-charge viewed as sinful,
and banished it as well she could.
When the nurses landed for the
transfer, the next ship was nothing
close to the clean beauty of the
Brittanic. Unclean cold metal
cots hung from the ceiling and the
bathroom was but pots in a small
room with no dividers. Soon an
unknown sickness spread around the
VAD's and nurses stuck in the cold
bottom of the ship, and when they
got to Malta, Vera was sick
three weeks before she was assigned
light duty at the hospital.
