Ivana: Mamman
IVANA
Mamman
---
The door opens.
-it's you!-
my finger to my lips,
she doesn't say my name.
Mamman! ~I missed her
-I brought two towels,
you'll have to do with one each,
your clothes also,
I'd kept them inside with the rainy season-
honestly, I love Mamman, she's wonderful
-I'll bring dinner in ten minutes,
as well as your bedding,
for now, clean up!-
she leaves.
I pull the curtain across with difficulty,
my shortness in the way.
I clean my hands and face in the sink.
fresh rainwater, love the smell.
I dry off and change.
a voice from the curtain:
-she's your mom?-
no but nearly, you done?
-yes-
I go to draw the curtain,
but he easily overreached me and pulled it aside.
you look a lot better,
much better for traveling I mean
thick pants and a short linen tunic,
I notice a thick sweater on top of his backpack,
and his hair is brushed.
You have a brush?
-yes, do you want to use it?-
caught off guard
no, yes, I mean, it's fine.
he hands it to me, and I take it.
my knotted hair is roughly braided,
I'm still brushing when Mamman returns.
Mamman's voice:
-open the door?-
I do so
-I brought hammocks,
dinner, sleeping bags,
breakfast for tomorrow?
I assumed you'll be leaving early.
I brought your change of clothes dear,
and lunches for tomorrow-
thank you Mamman
she leaves.
I leave the brush aside and hook up my hammock,
he does the same.
We might as well eat,
I hand him his plate
What's your name?

Did you write part 2? I would be interested in a little preface to the poem explaining it...where it comes from, what its a reaction to...
ReplyDeleteYeah part 2 is written it just hasn't been typed out online, it's all on paper. Also if you go into the "Ivana" album/label and read from the earliest poem to the latest one you can see the progression. The first one does have a bit of an introduction to it!
