Gavroche and His Friend
A Conversation between Gavroche and his friend
"Brigham! Guess what!" -Gavroche
"What?" -Brigham
"I have the best story for you, you ready?" -
Gavroche
"Yeah, I love your stories."
"Ok. Well, last night I was going over to my little hideaway nook for the night. You know, the one that's like a cave? Well as I got near it, I heard the couple who live in the cottage across the hedge talking, the wife was telling her husband how they didn't have enough money to pay their debts, and that she was afraid they'd get kicked out. Well the husband said he'd just work harder. But we already know he works overtime at the hardest jobs, so I felt bad for him. Anyway, as I crept into my spot I saw a young man walk down the path and hide behind a rock. Then coming down the road some minutes later I saw an elderly man. I felt bad for him too..."
"Gavroche you'll never come to any good if you're full of pity all the time! You need to look out for yourself." -Brigham interrupted
"I know Brig, but just wait, it gets better. So I was watching the old man come, and I felt bad for him. I thought about warning him but I knew we'd just both get beat up so what was the use. Anyway as he passed the rock the young guy jumps him! I couldn't help but cry out, but they didn't hear me. They were scuffling for a bit, and then one stood up, holding the other one off the ground by his collar. But check this out, it was the old guy! Anyway, then he went into a long lecture on why the young guy needed to not steal and should live an honest life. It kind of made sense, because he said that if he kept stealing he'd end up living a worse life since he couldn't just walk about free he'd always have to be hiding. So the old guy said it's better to work hard to get your money the right way rather than steal it, get rich quick, and end up worse off cause you have to keep hiding. Anyway, when he finishes he set the young guy down and gave him his money bag! Well when the old man was walking away the young man says, 'Old Babbler', and was watching him leave. So I snuck up behind him and grabbed the whole bag of money! It was pretty heavy, so it must have had quite a bit in it. The young guy didn't notice of course. Then I took the bag and threw it over the hedge so it woke up the husband I told you about earlier. He was so happy he said it fell from heaven."
"You didn't keep it?" -Brigham
"No, cause the husband and wife have kids" -
Gavroche
"Oh, I never thought about that." -Brigham
"Isn't it an awesome story though?" -
Gavroche
"Yeah, if only you could sell it." -Brigham
The Story is from Les Miserables, but I rewrote it from the perspective of Gavroche re-telling it to a friend.
