Great Grandma's Rationed Shoes
A simple story from Great Grandma
During World War II, clothes were rationed. Now, while this was going on, I was invited to two proms. I had found the cutest of dresses to wear, it was red and black plaid on the bottom, and a white on top. I figured that I could wear the dress to the proms and then cut it at the knee and wear it to church. I had already bought it when I looked at my shoes. I didn't have many, and those that I did were big black clonkers that I could not wear to prom. I only had one ration ticket and my mom said "You cannot spend your ration ticket on shoes for Prom!" I was really sad, and trying to figure out how I was going to get shoes for prom. As I was walking to school one day I passed by a little shoe shop, in the window were the cutest little red shoes that would have matched my dress perfectly. I couldn't resist so I went in, as I was looking at the little red shoes in the window the store owner came up to me.
"I see you like those shoes" he said,
"Yes I do," I replied.
"You don't need a ration ticket for them, they are heavily built *slippers"
I went to prom in my plaid dress with those little red slippers
*The reason the slippers were not rationed was because what was rationed was leather and rubber. The slippers were probably made out of felt or heavy fabric but no leather or rubber, they didn't have soles.

Wow! I love hearing stories like this. They really help you envision what earlier times were like.
